Volunteer Experiences
Day of Service 2007
During field hockey season the entire team dedicates a day cleaning up and helping our around the community. In 2007 we spent the day at Mallet School in Farmington, Maine cleaning up the school. We weeded gardens around the school, swept the tar on the playground so it would be clear of rocks that the children could fall on and lastly, added rocks and bark to the playground area.
Big Brother Big Sister
When I was in high school I was a big sister to an elementary student. This child came from a home with parents who did not pay much attention to her. This experience was rewarding and played a part in my decision to go into the helping field.
Brain Injury Walkathon
My senior year of high school my field hockey team helped put on the Brain Injury Walkathon. This walkathon took place in Waterville, Maine. We went there early in the morning to help set up the events for the people coming. At the event we spoke with individuals and did the quarter of a mile walk with them. This experience was very rewarding for me.
Lunch Buddies
During the spring of 2008 I was a lunch buddy to a young boy at the Mallet School. I had lunch with this boy once or twice a week and also went out to recess with him. This was a time for him to talk with someone and forget about what was going on at home.
Day of Service 2008
In 2008, the field hockey team spent the day weeding out the community garden at Franklin Memorial Hospital. After weeding the garden out we had to take out the hoses and the cages that helped the tomatoes grow. Lastly, we had to put many layers of mulch on the top to prep the garden for next year.
This is a picture of some of my teammates working in the community garden at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
