Introduction: To begin this unit I will make a KWL chart on an overhead to see what the students already know about the depression. Then I will hand out cards with subtopics on them. I will then have the kids tell me one at a time what they know or want to know about the subtopic. We will return to the KWL chart at the end of unit so that the students can reflect upon what they learned. KWL generator |
Literacy skills and strategies: Students will be broken into groups. Students will be in charge of making their own assignments. They will be able to choose from responses or role sheets. When they finish their books each group will do a group project. There will be a list of possible project ideas. Students will also have the option to come up with their own teacher approved project ideas. The groups will present their projects to the class. The three books I would use for this assignment are Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse; Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis; Nothing to Fear by Jackie French Koller. |
Stock market game: The students will work online to play the stock market game for several weeks. This game simulates stock market trading. The students will learn all about the stock market. We will then discuss how the stock market crash lead to the Great Depression. Teachers New to the Stock Market Game |
Project: Each student will research a topic related to the Great Depression. They will follow the writing process. They will then do a short presentation to the class. This will provide an opportunity for the class to learn additional topics. See Planning Cluster for Possible Topic Ideas |
