The Peace Corps has come along way since it was founded four decades ago. Since its creation, thousands of volunteers from the United States have served in many countries across the globe. These volunteers have devoted two or more years of their lives to helping people in foreign countries. Over the years, the Peace Corps’ volunteers have been successful in helping the Peace Corps serve the countries in need. These volunteers exceed their expectations by serving with a positive attitude and enthusiasm. The Peace Corps was created by John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961. Kennedy envisioned an organization of young people who devoted a part of their lives to help others in need. This organization would be made of volunteers working for the peace and success of other countries across the world. Out of this idea came the Peace Corps, a government organization that focused on “world peace and friendship” (Peace Corps Mission, the Peace Corps Website). When the Peace Corps was started, it only sent volunteers to six countries. Throughout the years, volunteers have been sent to more countries across the globe, and by the year 2007 volunteers have been sent to 139 countries (Fast Facts, Peace Corps Website). The range of countries involved in the Peace Corps was expanded because more people were signing up to go over seas. |
