Concept/History
The Titanic was one of the largest passenger cruise ship
at its time in 1912. It was captained by Edward John Smith.
It left England on April 10, 1912 and docked in France and Ireland
before setting sail for New York. There were many immigrants on
the ship from Ireland who were leaving for New York. She was
powered by coal furnaces that were stocked at full heat during the
voyage. There were reports of icebergs from other ships including
the Caronia and the Baltic. The captain was pressured by Bruce
Ismay, the chairman of the White Star Ship Lines to sail full speed
ahead despite all the warnings to slow down. The ship struck an
iceberg a few hours before April 15, 1912. She was hit on the
side of the ship and she started to fill up with water. During this
time, women and children are put into life rafts. The bottom of
the interior of the ship filled up fast and tipped the boat
vertically. It sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on April
15, 1912 at 2:30am. (Information gathered from the

Context:
Our class has just gone over Ireland and immigration. We have
talked about when and how Irish immigrants came over to Western Europe
and America. We went over the textile mills of the New
England. This Titanic web quest is the finally of the Ireland
immigration unit. It’s as tragedy that deserves to be
talked about and that pertains to the unit.

Goals:
The goals of this web quest are to focus on perspective and
bias. Each student has different roles that are very
extreme to each other. They must use each role to examine how
they would have felt on the ship during a tragedy. Strong and
descriptive adjectives will be focused on to make their journal
authentic.

MLR:
Social Studies
E. History
1) Explain that history includes the study of past human experience based on available evidence from a variety of sources.
2) Identify various major historical eras, major enduring themes,
turning points, events, consequences, persons, and timeframes, in the
history of the community, Maine, and the United States.
Rationale: Students will find articles online about the sinking of the
Titanic and will recreate a first person tale of these events.
Students will use different online resources to gather information to
make this accurate to each student’s role.
