1. ABOUT THE UNIT:
    This unit is designed for a mixed group of eighth graders. This unit will focus on the Holocaust and the important people during this time. This unit will focus on both social studies and English. Once this unit is completed, students will feel comfortable using google earth, and will have explored the program thouroughly. The students will also be comfortable researching on the internet, and will understand how to use garageband and inspirations.

Rationale: By listening to a book about the Holocaust, researching a person of that time period, and having the teacher explain the Holocaust to them, the students will become very familiar with the Holocaust. They will also be doing a lot of research in books and websites, and will actively learn in that way. They will also get into groups of three and four and discuss what they are learning, focusing on the people during the Holocaust.

Rationale: By writing a persuasive essay that has to be edited, peer advices, and turned in as a final copy, students will have to research a topic and try to persuade the other groups that their person should win a medel. They will edit their papers and revise, fixing erros such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

        Students write academic essays that state a clear position, supporting the position with relevant evidence.
                a. Write essays that support an idea and build a logical arguement excluding extraneous informations and differentiating between facts and opinions.

Rationale: Students will have to become familiar with a topic and will have to decide themselves why their person should win a medal. They will have to find reasons that their person is better than everyone else and will have to support this idea with facts and information. The paper must make sense and be logical and students must use supporting evidence to back up their ideas.
