Why I Chose It

47

ÒShe sees him chewing the bread. Rubbing his neck.  Shifting his head from side to side.  Her skin comes alive as she thinks of him.  Her fingers lace together as though combing the mare's mane.  The star on the chest of the mare twinkles in the skies of her dreams.Ó

This passage shows that Zel is dreaming of the prince.  It displays the extent of which Konrad and Meta consume her thoughts.  She wants to see him again.  It makes the reader excited to read further to find out if they will have their happy ending.

50

ÒI keep this child strong.Ó

This quote is important because it shows the mothers attitude toward Zel.  Zel's mother believes that Zel couldn't survive without her.  It is one of Napoli's short sweet sentences which you can read right by if you are not paying full attention.

52

ÒI can not enter churches.Ó

The mother says this and I can not help but wonder why.  Does this mean that Zel's mother is a witch?  A little foreshadowing.

54

ÒShe is as wordless as the egg.Ó

This quote was referring to Zel.  I thought this was a great example of a simile. Also, it further explains how the egg and goose and Zel and her mother compare (Zel not having a voice or being independent.

83

ÒThat night he eats rapunzel with oil and vinegar.  The next night he eats rapunzel with onions and tomatoes.  He has rapunzel with boiled potatoes and rapunzel with strong cheese.  Rapunzel with pork and rapunzel with perch.  And rapunzel plain.  Every day Konrad searches for Rapunzel.  And every night Konrad feasts on rapunzel.Ó

I found this quote particularly interesting because it is as if Konrad is getting his strength from rapunzel, and before now, Rapunzel (Zel) had never been depended on, she had always gotten her strength from her mother.  There is a shift starting to occur and it is evident in this quote.  The author uses the vegetable to represent Zel.

89

ÒMother gave her these paints.  Generous Mother.Ó

This struck me as weird yet great because it conveys Zel's thoughts!  It is almost a sarcastic comment by the teller but still tells the reader how brainwashed Zel is.

106

ÒThe woman who opened the door was dark-haired and hazel-eyed, almost the exact opposite of Rapunzel.Ó

This is also crucial in the relationship between Zel and the mother.  At that point I really didn't think Zel is her's.  Also foreshadowing very suddely.

111

ÒMother, is a magician at braiding.Ó

HAHA.  Has Zel not realized yet that her mother is magical!

113

ÒAnger flushes Zel's face.  But no, she mustn't allow herself anger.  She must listen to Mother.Ó

She is truly brian washed.  I can relate. This sentence is so descriptive, I love the verb flushes in this sentence.

112

ÒYou need to think right, Zel.  You need time to become reasonable.Ó

I can so relate!!  Also, this quote is the whole reason why Zel's mother locked her in the tower, so Zel would choose to live with her and not go off on her own.  This is a good example of hypocrisy.

114

ÒThe words chill Zel more than the fall winds, more than anything else Mother could have said.Ó

Zel is starting to realize that her mother is up to no good.  A good use of a comparison and chill is such a good verb.

125

ÒI don't have to see nothing.  I have the choice of seeing whatever I want.  Whomever I want.  But I see nothing.Ó

Crucial to the plot and the powers that Zel's mother possesses.  This quote also isolates Whomever I want, which adds emphasis.

The style of the book

The way the chapters are laid out to be in different people's perspectives.

Important because it shows of a different way to write, also it switches between third and first person occasionally.

166

ÒYou are Zel.  You are my Rapunzel.Ó

Adorable quote from Konrad showing that Zel and him will be together no matter what.  Again, the effectiveness of short sentences to add emphasis.  Rapunzel is what kept Konrad going.

170-171

ÒI want to remember Zel as the effervescent child, but I cannot deny that that child is now withdrawn like a turtle.  Some thing must change.Ó Napoli also repeated ÒSome thing must change.Ó throughout the end of the book.

This quote shows that the witch is not heartless and knows that Zel is not doing well in the tower.  It also shows that the mother really does care for Zel.  The repetitions emphasize her point and bring it back up as foreshadowing that something might change.

192

ÒZel touches the stain on the sheet, her wedding sheet, for last night she and Konrad vowed to love each other till death do them part.Ó

THEY GOT MARRIED! Yay!  The change  that was hinted at at the end, and the almost happy ending we waited for until Zel got carried away again.
