Katie's Short Story
Katie Bears- 2006
“What is your name?” a child asked a boy, who, despite
having an abundance of benches around the perimeter of the park, fixed
himself amid the flowers and dirt. The boy turned surprised, he
muttered, “Evan”. The child sat beside her new
acquaintance, with the hope of joining in his game.
It appeared Evan was plucking flowers
from the ground and balling them up in his little pudgy hands. The
child, a small girl of five or six, couldn’t grasp the idea of
destroying these beautiful flowers for enjoyment.
“What are you doing?” asked she.
Again, the boy named Evan seemed surprised to have company, looked at her strangely.
“Are you from around here?” he asked.
She replied, “No, My mom and I are from across the big bridge, where are you from?”
“Yup” he answered, “We live in the Blue City, right
down the road.” He suddenly blurted, “Hey! Follow
me!”
She obediently sprouted from the flattened grass and followed her new
friend to another part of the park. They rounded a shrub and in the
orangey glow of dusk she saw a miniature city, a miniature Blue City,
made completely of bunched up flowers.
